Effects of down-range feedback and the ARI zeroing target in rifle marksmanship training. [Seward Smith; U.S.

Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences. ARI Field Unit. EFFECTS OF DOWN-RANGE FEEDBACK AND THE ARI ZEROING TARGET IN RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP TRAINING INTRODUCTION A perennial problem in the Army is rifle marksmanship training.

It has drawn criticism, examination and revision repeatedly across the years (e.g., Conway, ; Dees, Magner, & McCluskey, ; McFann, Hammes, & Taylor, ; Wigger, ).

(Phase II of Basic Rifle Marksmanship) The M16A2 zero target squares are centimeter in size while the M4 zero target squares are centimeters in size. Downrange feedback training. The zero on this target is more valid than the zero obtained on the meter range when the wind is properly compensated for.

Soldiers should fire two 5 round shot groups to confirm zero or three-round shot groups to refine their zero. The pit crews should spot targets after each shot.

When standard zeroing procedures are followed, a rifle that is properly zeroed for one soldier is close to the zero for another soldier.

When a straight line is drawn from target center to the tip of the front sight post and through the center of the rear aperture, it makes little difference whose eye is looking along this line. Among male trainees, those who received either the ARI Zeroing Target of Down-range Feedback training were superior in their record fire scores to trainees in the control condition.

The Army’s previous training doctrine attempted a simplified ap-proach to zeroing that tried to be successful without having to ex-plain concepts that are important to marksmanship, gunnery, and a basic understanding of ballistics.

You now have short range zero targets customized for your rifle and the desired zero for your ammunition of choice. These techniques were tested in a field experiment utilizing 2, basic trainees undergoing basic rifle marksmanship training at Fort Jackson, S.

Among male trainees, those who received either the ARI Zeroing Target of Down-range Feedback training were superior in their record fire scores to trainees in the control condition. Many people forgot to go for the 12 o'clock hold on the target zones.

As a result they had a nice group of bullet holes UNDER the bullseyes. Still at close range two rapid shots from an M16 is.
